Harriet F. McLaughlin was the J.H.S. 47 School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing principal from 1940 to 1960. She encouraged Deaf students to do their best in their work and to think ahead for what they wanted to do in life. Her favorite quotation was, “Follow your dreams, for as you dream you shall become.”
On Fridays, she went into each and every classroom to read students’ compositions and always praised them for their work. It is for this reason we established the Harriet McLaughlin Memorial award (1984–2001), given to the best all-around graduate of J.H.S. 47.
