The Edith (Allerup) Kleberg Library
(First Floor under P.S. 347)
Edith’s love of books goes back to her childhood at P.S. 47 in the late 1920’s. It was the school librarian who encouraged Edith to enjoy reading books. “My class would go to the library en masse every Monday to browse around and to return and borrow books. I don’t know about the others, but if I finished one or more books before the following Monday, I was allowed to go back for more books.” Edith graduated from P.S. 47 in 1934.
Over the years of her life, Edith married and raised two sons. She was involved in several organizations for which she wrote articles. She pursued her dream to become a librarian with a Bachelor of Science in Library Science and Information Services from Gallaudet University in 1968. She became a full time librarian at the National Association of the Deaf from 1972-1981. Eleven years later, she passed away in 1992.
