Evelyn Gamsu, ’57, our dear and former president of “47” Alumni, passed away on Saturday morning, May 2, 2015 at the age of 72.
Evelyn truly loved her school. She was a well-liked student and was always cheerful. Above are some pictures above from when she appeared on the Kathy Norris Show on NBC in 1950. The latter two photographs were taken at JHS 47 in 1957.
During the 1957 graduation, she received the Bernard Robbins Memorial Award to a Well Adjusted Deaf Girl award. She was part of the Service Squad and was inducted into the Arista Roll.
As president and secretary of “47 Alumni during the late 1970s until the late 1980s, she was an outspoken person who cared deeply about her school and the alumni association. She encouraged board members to take active roles in events, activities, and meetings. In 1980, the “47” Alumni Hall of Fame was given to her for her extraordinary leadership. She resigned as president in 1989, due to health problems.
Evelyn’s sense of humor, smile, energy, enthusiasm, laughter, and most of all, her love for “47” will surely be missed. Her beloved parents, Clara and Arnold Gamsu, both also from JHS 47, passed away many years ago. She is survived by her daughters, Gail and Jody and their husbands, and three grandchildren.
